Discover its history, the allure of its bottles, and how the market has elevated them into collectible treasures. by collecto 3 June 2025 2 minutes read Founded in 1955 in Nagano Prefecture, Karuizawa was a boutique distillery renowned for its artisanal production. Using Golden Promise barley and sherry casks imported from Spain, the distillery produced whiskies with profound complexity, aromatic intensity, and fruity and spicy notes. The distillery closed permanently in 2000 due to declining demand and shortsighted corporate policies. However, this closure turned Karuizawa into a legend of Japanese whisky: surviving bottles, often numbered, are now considered among the rarest and most prized in the world. ## The Karuizawa Whisky Market In recent years, Karuizawa has secured an elite spot in the global collectibles market. According to Whisky Auctioneer and Bonhams, in 2023 a Karuizawa 1960 was sold at auction for over €400,000, while other iconic vintages (1971, 1976, 1981) consistently exceed €50,000 per bottle. The rarest releases, such as single casks and the Noh series, have seen increases of over +400% in the last ten years. The growing interest in Japanese whiskies and the definitive closure of the distillery have fueled sustained demand. Rarity is accentuated by its limited annual production (less than 150,000 liters), making authentic bottles true liquid masterpieces. Releases bottled by Velier and Number One Drinks have also strengthened Karuizawa’s reputation, increasing its appeal among international collectors. ## Why Collect Karuizawa Today Collecting Karuizawa means immersing yourself in an unrepeatable chapter of Japanese whisky history.
