The vineyard, located on a unique clay-rich soil with optimal exposure and a perfect microclimate, was dedicated entirely to Merlot, inspired by the great châteaux of Pomerol. The first vintage, 1987, was an immediate success: a pure Merlot with power and refinement, capable of competing with the world’s greatest wines. In the years that followed, Masseto emerged from Ornellaia’s shadow, becoming a brand in its own right with a dedicated winery and an unmistakable style. Each vintage is produced in limited quantities (about 30,000 bottles) and represents a combination of artisanal tradition and cutting-edge technology. ## The Masseto Market According to Liv-Ex and Sotheby’s, Masseto is now one of the most highly valued Italian wines globally. In 2024, a case of six bottles of Masseto 2001 sold at auction for over €20,000, while more recent vintages like 2015 and 2016 have seen average revaluations of +120% compared to their original release prices. Between 2015 and 2024, the average value of a bottle of Masseto increased by +90%, positioning the brand as one of the most solid investments in the luxury wine market.
