Reflet d’Antan stems from a simple yet rare idea in Champagne: instead of relying on a single vintage, blending each year’s new wine with that of all previous years, in a cycle that never stops. Behind it stands a family of winegrowers, the Bérêches, who have worked the same vineyards in Ludes for over a century and a half. The name itself declares it: “Reflet d’Antan” translates as “reflection of a bygone time,” an image that suits a wine built precisely on the layering of different vintages. ## A Perpetual Reserve System Established in 1985 Reflet d’Antan is based on a perpetual reserve, also known in Champagne as solera: 600-liter barrels in which, each year, a portion of the wine is drawn off for bottling and replaced with the latest harvested vintage. Unlike a classic “non-vintage” champagne, which blends only the most recent available harvests, the perpetual reserve is never completely emptied: the oldest wine always remains present, in progressively smaller proportions, alongside that of the latest harvest. Reflet d’Antan is bottled exclusively in Magnum format, a choice that is not a whim: the greater volume of wine per unit of cork surface slows evolution in the bottle and extends over time the complexity that the solera method builds in the cellar.
