Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2023: what the Domaine’s approximately 1.8-hectare monopole in Vosne-Romanée is, how the 2023 vintage was born, and what critics are saying today.

The Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2023 is the most recent vintage of the wine produced in the eponymous monopole vineyard of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, in Vosne-Romanée. It is one of the few wines in the world where the label, the vineyard, and the producer share the same name, as the Domaine is the sole owner and winemaker.

## What is Romanée-Conti

Romanée-Conti is a monopole: a vineyard of approximately 1.8 hectares in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, entirely owned by the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The grape variety cultivated is Pinot Noir, and the vineyard holds Grand Cru status within the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée classification established in 1936\. Consequently, there is no Romanée-Conti produced by a different domaine: the entire appellation belongs to and is vinified by the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The label bears the full designation “Appellation Romanée-Conti Contrôlée” alongside the Domaine’s name, confirming that producer and cru coincide on the same, unique bottle.

## The history of the Domaine and the vineyard

The vineyard, then simply called La Romanée, has origins dating back to 1232\. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, purchased La Romanée and reserved its wine for his own table: the purchase was contested by Madame de Pompadour, favorite of Louis XV, and cost the prince 8,000 livres at the time. After the French Revolution, the vineyard was confiscated and auctioned as national property, and the name Romanée-Conti gradually came into use. In 1869, the Duvault-Blochet family took over the estate, giving it the structure that led to the current Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In addition to Romanée-Conti, the Domaine owns or co-owns other Grand Cru vineyards in and around Vosne-Romanée: these include La Tâche, which like Romanée-Conti is a monopole covering approximately 6 hectares, as well as parcels in Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, and Montrachet. The Domaine thus remains one of the most significant entities in all of Burgundy in terms of Grand Cru holdings.

## The 2023 vintage

The 2023 vintage of Romanée-Conti was harvested on September 11, 2023, and bottled on June 17, 2025, with a yield of 37.7 hectoliters per hectare. Production totaled 675 dozen bottles, approximately 8,100 units worldwide for an entire vintage from one of Burgundy’s smallest vineyards. The 2023 season was complex, marked by rain, disease pressure, and a sharp rise in temperatures close to harvest, which necessitated a particularly rigorous selection of grapes: a widespread practice that year among Côte de Nuits producers dealing with an abundant and irregular crop that needed to be brought under control before picking.

## What critics are saying about the vintage

Initial critical assessments describe a very fragrant and precise wine, with red fruit, great freshness, very fine tannins, and a structure capable of supporting long aging. Critic Matthew Jukes awarded the vintage a score of 19.5++/20, indicating a drinking window between 2040 and 2065 and noting that the wine will only show its full expression after about 25 years of bottle aging; Wine Spectator, in a review by critic Bruce Sanderson specifically referring to this label, gave it 98 points, noting that at this stage the wine does not yet surpass La Tâche, the Domaine’s other flagship label, focusing more on finesse than power.
