A Voutilainen 28Sport in steel, one of only eight examples made in this metal, is leading Phillips’s online auction “Watches Online: The New York Sessions Fall 2026”: bids have already surpassed $700,000 against a high estimate of $240,000, nearly triple. It matters because it shows how the independent watchmaking market—that of small brands outside the major groups—can move figures comparable to those of the most prestigious historic marques when the piece is genuinely rare. The auction, open from October 1, 2026 and in collaboration with Bacs & Russo, comprises 88 lots and closes on October 9: Phillips describes it as the most valuable online sale ever organized by its New York team, with a total estimate approaching $3.94 million on the declared high estimates. ## The bid figures The leading lot is the Voutilainen 28Sport, a steel chronograph with a central onyx dial and blue guilloché hour scale: only eight examples exist in this metal, and this may be one of just two with this dial combination. Phillips’s initial estimate was $120,000–240,000\. On October 2, 2026, bids had already climbed to $550,000; on October 6, according to trade publication JCK, they had reached $700,000, nearly triple the high estimate, with the auction still open for another three days. The final price will be known only at the close on October 9, and will be a matter unto itself. Kari Voutilainen is a Finnish independent watchmaker active in Switzerland, known for the artisanal finishing of dials and hand-made movements: the collecting of independent watchmaking, far from the major luxury groups, is a segment that in recent years has seen both critical attention and auction prices for the rarest pieces grow. The 28Sport line was conceived as the most sporting offering in the Voutilainen catalogue, designed for more robust daily wear compared to the more delicate complications for which the brand is known, yet without sacrificing the same care in dial finishing that characterizes the rest of the production. The leap between estimate and bid is not an isolated case in the contemporary independent watch market: pieces made in very limited series, often of a few dozen or a few units, tend to move far more than production models from major brands when a rare example reaches the secondary market, because demand from specialist collectors far exceeds available supply. ## The rest of the auction The Voutilainen is not the only notable piece in the catalogue. Phillips is also offering a Patek Philippe ref. 5270J in yellow gold, a complete collection belonging to a single owner, estimated at $80,000–160,000; a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116506 “Platona” in platinum, with ice-blue dial, diamond-set indices, and brown Cerachrom bezel, estimated at $70,000–140,000; and an F.P. Journe Octa Quantième Perpétuel, also estimated at $70,000–140,000\. Rounding out the leading group are two A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual chronographs, including a Double Split, and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos Marqueterie “Gustav Klimt” clock. For none of these pieces is the auction yet closed: the estimates cited are the opening ones, not hammer prices, and any comparison with the Voutilainen should be made only once results are published. The presence in the same catalogue of an independent artisanal piece alongside historic references from Patek Philippe and Rolex is typical of Phillips’s online auctions in recent years, which deliberately juxtapose grande horlogerie from manufactures with the smaller names of independent haute horlogerie, in the same session and before the eyes of the same collectors. ## What to Watch Now The real news, setting aside the final result that will be known only on October 9, is the distance between the estimate of an independent watchmaking piece and what the market is willing to offer when the rarity is genuine: one example out of eight, probably one out of two for that dial combination, has already gathered in a few days bids nearly triple the estimated ceiling.
