Two identical items, if preserved differently, can show up to a 90% price difference on the secondary market. That\u2019s why knowing how to evaluate condition isn\u2019t just a useful skill\u2014it\u2019s a way to protect your cultural and collectible assets.<\/p>\n<h2>For cards: 4 key criteria<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Centering<br \/>\nThe artwork or logo should be precisely centered within the card\u2019s borders. Perfect centering is rare, and even mint cards with poor centering lose significant value.<\/li>\n<li>Corners<br \/>\nCorners must be sharp, symmetrical, and free of bends or rounding. For example, in Pok\u00e9mon cards, the iconic rounded corner should retain its original factory curvature.<\/li>\n<li>Edges<br \/>\nEdges should be clean, with no whitening or chipping. Cards showing whitening along the edges lose multiple grading points.<\/li>\n<li>Surface<br \/>\nNo scratches, fingerprints, creases, or bubbles. Print gloss matters too: a dull or faded surface, even if unplayed, can lower the card\u2019s grade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>For comics: details that matter<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Spine<br \/>\nNo spine breaks, folds, or \u201cspine roll\u201d (dorsal curve). Original staples must be intact\u2014especially important for comics from the 1960s and \u201970s.<\/li>\n<li>Corners &amp; Cover<br \/>\nCover should be sharp, unyellowed, and tear-free. Corners must be intact, with no signs of moisture. Glossy covers (like 1990s Marvel) must retain their shine.<\/li>\n<li>Centerfold &amp; Pages<br \/>\nCenterfold must be well attached, and internal pages should be white or evenly ivory. Brittle or browned pages drastically lower grading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Official evaluation: grading<\/h2>\n<p>There are globally recognized grading companies that evaluate condition and seal the item in a slab:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cards: PSA, BGS, CGC<\/li>\n<li>Comics: CGC Comics, CBCS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Grades range from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint), with huge price gaps. A 1st Edition Charizard graded PSA 10 can exceed \u20ac300,000, while a PSA 6 version may not reach \u20ac10,000.<\/p>\n<h2>Storage and protection<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Even post-purchase, preservation is key:<\/li>\n<li>Rigid sleeves, top loaders, slabs, UV-protected boxes<\/li>\n<li>Controlled temperature and humidity<\/li>\n<li>No direct exposure to light or magnetic fields<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like wine or aged spirits, proper storage is part of the value. A well-kept comic can appreciate in price just for how it\u2019s been archived.<\/p>\n<p>In this market, condition isn\u2019t a detail\u2014it\u2019s the rule.
