How to Properly Store a Collectible Spirit Over Time

Unlike wine, a well-bottled spirit doesn’t evolve in the bottle—but that doesn’t mean it’s indestructible. Storage conditions play a key role in preserving its value and collectibility. Here’s how to keep your bottles in optimal condition.

Always upright

Spirits should be stored vertically, not horizontally. High-proof alcohol can degrade the cork if it stays in contact for long periods. Never store collectible whisky on its side.

Constant temperature

Ideal storage is at a stable 16–20°C. Avoid environments with fluctuations like kitchens or attics. Climate-controlled cellars or vaults are perfect.

No direct light

Monitor the fill level

Spirits can evaporate over time, especially older bottles. A low fill level significantly decreases resale value. Regularly check vintage bottles for any visible evaporation.

Avoid vibrations and strong odors

Keep bottles in still, scent-free environments. Vibrations from appliances or heavy speakers can disturb the liquid. Corks may also absorb odors from nearby solvents or chemicals.
